'Fine Art Sails' London 2013

Begbie_LondonBoatShow

Read the article in COWES YACHTING, Spring Edition 2013 about all artists and the project:
A weekend of Fine Art Sails* racing at the London Boat Show 2013 was won by the boat and crew with my sail 'An Eye for the Buoys’.
Michael Ross' official CNM Estates UK Star Championship regatta award went to Xavier Rohart and Serge Pulfer.
Fine Art Sails is the first-of-its-kind collaboration between World Class Yachting and Internationally acclaimed artists. Established in 2012 by concept founder Michael Ross of CNM Estates, Fine Art Sails invites artists to create original artwork sails. I am delighted to take part!

My artwork for the sail is derived from 'EVE' 2008, a limited edition flat steel-panel sculpture translated into a sail format.

I am particularly impressed by how the origins of the 'Art Sails' idea have transformed from street art and graffiti painting into the initiation of a completely new art form, literally inventing a new 'canvas' on which artists are invited to work. I'm also simply amazed at the momentum and speed at which this project has moved and gathered force since it began in 2012.

The ethos of the 'Art Sails' concept and of Michael Ross' desire to draw together the seemingly disparate worlds of nautical sailing and 'the Arts' is potentially as versatile and expansive as the invited artists can make this concept themselves, culminating in an artwork of truly magnificent proportions. I am pleased and honoured to take part and as the image I have created for this project is derived from an existing sculpture, which in itself is originated from a tiny passport photo, this demonstrates how adaptable and surprising the 'Art Sails' concept actually is.

My Music Tips

Begbie-Musictips2013

It's good to have the opportunity to once again exhibit 'HEROINE' at SCULPT Gallery in Essex. My Amy Winehouse portrait in steel panel, which will be showing at SCULPT gallery. I'm a great music fan and actually use music to work to in the studio, which is often conducive to creative inspiration. Amy Winehouse's creative talent as well as the Chill-Out Buddha-Bar and electronic genre such as Jan Pulsford's flowing sounds or the Latino Jazz undertones from Plum Busby are examples of music that I like to listen to while I am working. If you'd like to join me for a live gig: Sunday, 3 March 2013, 14-16:30, 'Plum Busby' at Hideaway, London, SW16. I'll be there for the Sunday lunch and Extravaganza!

'REAL is me' 17-20 Jan 2013, Amsterdam

image Begbie_SINUU-2012image realism-holland

Image: ‘Sinuu’, 2012. A double sculpture, female front and male back torso, suspended, in black finished steel-mesh. Currently located at
Gallery Van Loon and Simons is showing my work.
Being an important centre of the avant-garde art in Northern Europe, Amsterdam has also another, much older and richer tradition – that of realism. Dutch painters were famous since Renaissance through the 18, 19 and 20 century. In the middle of the 20c., a movement called magic realism contributed with important figurative paintings depicting figurative scenes in a fantastic, mysterious scenery.
